South Africa pays tribute to Miriam Makeba, legend of the African continent

Hundreds of people gathered Saturday in Johannesburg to pay their last tribute to the legendary voice of the African continent and a symbol of the struggle against apartheid, Miriam Makeba, who died last weekend in Italy.

Politicians, musicians and artists of South African products are deemed to be in one of the most important concert halls of Johannesburg to pay tribute to the memory of Miriam Makeba through songs and poems.

“She did what she could do better when she died. In her own words, she loved music more than anything and was always happy when she was on stage, “said Culture Minister, Pallo Jordan.

Legendary voice of the African continent and a symbol of the struggle against apartheid, singer aged 76 years died of a heart attack after a concert for the Italian writer threatened with death by the Mafia Roberto Saviano, on the night of 9 10 November near Naples (southern Italy).

Mr. Jordan praised a “woman whose name has become synonymous with the struggle for freedom in South Africa, a woman who for more than three decades has shown through her music the struggle of the people.”

Born in South Africa on 4 March 1932, Miriam Makeba was a South African singer best known in her country and abroad where she gained fame with hits like “Pata Pata” and “The Click Song “, but also through her stand against apartheid in force in her country.

Banned by the apartheid regime because of her appearance in a film denouncing white segregation, she spent 31 years in exile, particularly in the United States and Guinea. Nicknamed “Mama Africa” Miriam Makeba had returned to her country in the early 1990s after the release of Nelson Mandela.
