The South African President Jacob Zuma announced the launch in October of a broad campaign census which should allow a better understanding of the country’s population, estimated at about fifty million.
“The projections suggest that the population of South Africa could be around 50 million (people). We need to know if it’s true and how that population is distributed,” the president said in a statement.
Zuma urged all people residing in the country on the night of October 9 to 10 to answer a questionnaire of 75 questions, which will be distributed during three weeks in the fifteen million South African households by some 156. 000 census-takers.
“We need to know where the people live, work and play, young and old, rich and poor, employed and unemployed, learners, educated and uneducated alike,” said Zuma, adding that “the information collected will help the Government plan for the future. “
The questionnaires will be available in all eleven official languages??, as well as French and Portuguese for African immigrants, he specified.
Results should be published in March 2013.
The last census, held in 2001, had established the South African population at 44.8 million.
