{"id":82,"date":"2009-02-18T06:41:34","date_gmt":"2009-02-18T06:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/2009\/02\/18\/malis-tuareg-rebels-down-weapons\/"},"modified":"2009-02-18T06:41:34","modified_gmt":"2009-02-18T06:41:34","slug":"malis-tuareg-rebels-down-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/malis-tuareg-rebels-down-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"Mali&#8217;s Tuareg rebels down weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-81\" src=\"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/mali.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" \/>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hundreds of former Tuareg insurgents have surrendered their arms at a ceremony in Mali to mark their official return to the peace process. <!--more--> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some 700 ex-rebels, who can now join the regular army, were at the airport event in the north-east town of Kidal. <\/p>\n<p>Fighters from a group led by key rebel leader Ibrahim Ag Bahanga participated in the ceremony. <\/p>\n<p>But Mr Bahanga, an opponent of the 2006 Algiers peace deal, was not present &#8211; he has fled the country. <!-- E SF --><\/p>\n<p>Mali&#8217;s Territorial Administration Minister Gen Kafougouna Kone attended, as did Algeria&#8217;s ambassador to Mali, who has been the chief negotiator in the peace process. <\/p>\n<p>The indigenous, nomadic Tuareg have been fighting for a greater political role and more economic development in their desert region. <\/p>\n<p>Mali&#8217;s government has promised to invest in areas inhabited by the Tuareg nomads if they give up their demands for regional autonomy. <\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Real issues&#8217;<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>The governor of Kidal region, Alhamdou Ag Ilyene, said that now the former combatants had given up rebellion the real issues facing his region could be tackled. <\/p>\n<p>It is expected the ex-rebels will either be integrated into the Malian defence forces or the government will try to find them other work to help them settle back into civilian life. <\/p>\n<p>The military launched an offensive in early January against the insurgents in the north-east of the country. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month Mali said its army had taken control of all the bases of Mr Bahanga&#8217;s rebel group. <\/p>\n<p>The defence ministry also said Mr Bahanga had fled, but his rebel group denied the claims. <\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Martin Vogl in Mali&#8217;s capital, Bamako, says the problem for the government is that the most active rebel leader, responsible for some of the deadliest recent attacks, is still out in the desert. <\/p>\n<p>The Malian army is trying to hunt down Mr Bahanga and for the moment seem to have him on the run. <\/p>\n<p>But our correspondent says the rebel leader may be just biding his time and there is always the risk he could strike again when the Malian army lest expects it. <\/p>\n<p>The Tuaregs, a historically nomadic people living in the Sahara and Sahel regions of North Africa, have had militant groups in Mali and Niger engaged in sporadic armed struggles for several decades. <!-- E BO --><\/p>\n<p>Source<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/africa\/7894903.stm\" title=\"bbc.co.uk\">Bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Hundreds of former Tuareg insurgents have surrendered their arms at a ceremony in Mali&#8230;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on get_the_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":81,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[6],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=82"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/81"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=82"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=82"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/amagep.co.za\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=82"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
