AMAGEP organised a training course on environmental and social risk management and governance to provide knowledge to Young people especially students, businesswomen and businessman around Braamfontein in Johannesburg to understand the environmental impact and climate change problems.
At the conclusion of the programme, Alain Matundu said, the training focused on building the capacity of young people around Braamfontein because most of them are students and future leaders of this country to better understand the risks of climate change. The training consists of on-street talks with people, small gathering around a cold drink at lunch time in different restaurants of Braamfontein and face to face meeting with people discussing those issues. Amagep shares pamphlets and booklets on climate change to those interested. Some serious conversations are also made based on interest of people. On 19 July 2022, AMAGEP organized in Braamfontein the great meeting on Climate change where the work done daily on the street since two weeks has paid in bringing people at Braamfontein Recreation Center to learn about Climate change for 1h30min at Launch time.
By leading this campaign, there is a lot of interest in climate change around the world because it is affecting people’s livelihoods, so the banking sector plays an important role in raising awareness of climate change and its problems. Recently, there were floods in the province of Kwazulu Natal were many lives were lost.
Global warming requires global action and no one is spared but developing countries with fewer resources to adapt to climate change will be more vulnerable than others. As a continent, Africans are committed to playing our role, especially in our financial sector, she added. As people living in South Africa, there is a need to strengthen the capacity of the group making the biggest population in the country to prepare future decision makers for a better world.
AMAGEP looks forward to international standard-setting bodies to provide more guidance and clarity on how these risks should be treated by the youth. In extension of these ambitions, AMAGEP looks forward engaging the department of Higher education to work on promoting climate change awareness training in different institutions because students have friends and family. Their better understanding supported by a great involvement in climate policy will benefit greatly the nation in long-term. .
In this environment of Braamfontein, there are people working in the banking sectors, usual business like printing, IT, Hair salons, cafes and restaurants, who all need to understand whether their decisions and some extent of their work is harming the environment. If there is a correlation between their sector of activity and climate change, they must take steps to mitigate those impacts.
The next activity will be held on the 21 July 2022 at Parktown Boys School. Many people are invited for a big discussion on environmental policy and climate change. The meeting will be held at launch time to allow people working around to join. Amagep will also offer refreshment. Most people expected in Parktown will be young professional and middle class, including some students.
